Week 6 Writing

Below is the latest paragraph from a Room 1 writing book this week. You can see the effort that is going to to include features from our success criteria (Sentence variety; Precise nouns, verbs, and adjectives; onomatopoeia, similies) :

‘hey Jayden come this out” I called (Jaydens my younger brother)
“cool” he said the wolf spider lugged its fat hairy body under a leaf. Screeeeeechh thud . “What was that?” I asked. We ran over to the roadside laying there a limp grey cat body in a puddle of warm blood “Smoky” Jayden criyed out. As the day ticked on we burried our cat and kind of just carried on. When night fell things got really creepy. A deathly screeech pierced the night. I sat up in my bed a cold sweat ran down my forehead my eyes flicking around the room.
“Just a dream just a dream” I convinced myself that it was just a dream. I lay back down. Shut my eyes. A hollow meow echoed through the house.
“Probably a stray” I whispered in an unsteady voice. In the morning me and my brothers were making mud castles. and hurling stones into the sloppy mess. “Wait wasnt this where we buried Smokey?” I murrmed.

“Yep” Jayden studded in an unsteadily it was like I got stabbed in the cheast “Then where is she?” I managed to spit out. my heart beating rapidly my eyes close as I - pass out

We identified precise verbs and adjectives as the strongest parts of this writing.
Writing correctly punctuated sentences was identified as the biggest weakness for this piece of writing.
This is typical of Room 1 writing at the moment. We are putting a lot of effort into ensuring our writing is correctly punctuated as well as included the expected features of Year 6-8 writing.

Multiplying and dividing by 10,100, and 1,000

63x10 = 630
There's a thousand, hundred, tens, and ones column, so you put 6 in the tens column because there's 6 tens and the 3 goes in the ones column because there's 3 ones and you multiply it by 10 which makes the 63,630 so you then move the digits one to the left so the six is in the thousand column and the 3 is in the tens column and the 0 is in the ones column because there's 0 ones.

Taranaki Hardcore Tournament

Yesterday we went to Devon Intermediate to play a league tournament. We played against 4 other school teams, Hawera Intermediate, Devon Intermediate, Francis Douglas, Bell Block.
The reason that I think we won is that we worked great as a team. For example we listened to the captain, spread out on the field, and shared the ball around to all of the players. We tried our hardest to make meters by pushing forward  to get a try. On defence we tried to tackle low and not high.

Fashion in the 1980s

Students are also expected to research fashion from the decade they are researching. Here is an example:
In the 1980s lots of different fashion trends emerged. One thing that happened is that movies and television programmes showed groups of people wearing trendy clothes. For example young people were shown to be wearing bright contrasting colours such as the lady in this picture. She is wearing a cool coloured shirt (blue) with a bright or hot coloured belt (yellow). In these 1980s these movies and television programmes were viewed world-wide. This resulted in people from all around the world wearing clothes in these styles.

History by the Decade 1980s

Here is an example of the research we are finishing about world history:
Space Shuttle
The first ever Space Shuttle was launched in the 1980s. It was different from previous space ships. After it re-entered earths atmosphere it would land on an airstrip like an aeroplane. This was unlike older space ships which would splash down in the ocean. This meant that it could be used again and again.
This space shuttle was named the Challenger after a British sailing ship that was used to explore the world and discovering new things. It received its name because the Space Shuttle was also a ship for exploring and discovering but instead of travelling in the sea this ship travelled in space. On its first mission the astronauts completed a space walk. A space walk is when astronauts leave their ship and float in space. They have a rope-type thing that stops them from floating away.

Room 1 Adding Decimal Fractions

Adding Decimal Fractions

This week room one have been learning to add decimal fractions. We have talked about how to work these problems out a number of different ways.

Dallas' way:
0.375 + 0.125 = 0.5

0.375 + 0.125
0.005 + 0.005 = 0.01 because ten thousandths make one hundredth.

0.375 + 0.125
0.07 + 0.02 = 0.09 We also made one more hundredth in the first step, above so 0.09 + 0.01 = 0.1 because 10 hundredths make one tenth.
0.375 + 0.125
0.3 + 0.1 = 0.4 plus the tenth that we made in step two, above. 0.4 + 0.1 = 0.5
So the answer is 0.5 and we put that in as the answer to the original question.

Jevyn's way:
0.375 = 375/1000. 0.125 = 125/1000.
375/1000 + 125/1000 = 500/1000.
500/1000 = 5/10 = 0.5 so the answer is 0.5

Thanks Dallas and Jevyn.

Boys Mentoring

Today boys from Rooms 1 and 4 went to "boys mentoring" with Mr Le Prou. Today the boys learnt about the difference between a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke engine. The boys also made rafts from a variety of materials. The rafts were tested in the school pool. The boys also had to work out whether they could make an old iron bath float in the school pool.

We used "Photo booth" to create these amazing photos. We used props to make our photos a bit quirky.
We displayed these photos at out Art Exhibition. Miss Williams set up a "Photo booth" for the parents to use when they came to see our work. We are really looking forward to seeing their photos!!!!

Art Exhibition

Room One used a range of techniques to complete these amazing art works. Firstly the class completed a digital  workshop to learn about portrait painting. After completing the workshop the class used their I Pads to take photos of themselves and used these to create their own wonderful pieces of art.
