Calf and lamb day exhibition

Today Room 1 did art work for calf and lamb day. We had 3 days to get our art done. When the class was done, their art went to the learning centre where it could be judged. Ella had drawn a cat. She wanted to cut out strips of paper to stick onto the background. But unfortunately Ella did not come first.

Hailie had drawn a butterfly with a broken heart. She came 1st! When she saw that she had came 1st, she was really excited. It took Hailie two days to finish the artwork. The art work that Room 1 had done was absolutely great.

Term 3 Reading. Inferring.

A learning need for Room 1 readers is to practice the reading comprehension strategy of inferring. To do this we will be looking at why inferring means and practicing inferring with small excerpts of text. We will then keep a track of our inferring using tables like the ones below that differentiate literal meanings we glean from texts and inferred meanings. Look out for your students versions of these tables (and their vocabulary building work) n their blogs this term).

Example of Vocabulary Building Learning Activity

Term 3 Reading: Vocabulary Building

Hello everyone. Here is some term 3 reading work I am planning. One of the cornerstone learning needs for students at every level is vocabulary building.
This week we will be looking at vocabulary from a text called 'Gary the Worm.' We will use challenging words from the text to develop our vocabulary building strategies.
By designing definitions and reflecting on how we came to the definition, students are encouraged to become metacognitive about vocabulary building strategies.

Academic Day

Mount Spa 2015
Mount Spa (also known as academic day) is a competition between local schools that evolves around knowledge. Schools such as: Auroa, St Joes, Kaponga, Matapu, Mania and Opunake Primary all compete for the Mount Spa cup. Each school enters a team of around 6 to compete in the events.

We pulled up at Kaponga, excited for the day. Our team walked through the main gates with an ambition of doing our best and hopefully winning the Mount Spa cup. The first thing that caught our attention was the vibrant bright colours of the Kaponga school. We got taken into a room that was especially set up for the competition and we took our seat. Lucy and Jamiee were our spellers. They were doing really well but unfortunately Lucy got out on the word chrysalis. We were now relying onJamiee but she misunderstood a word and she spelt Corral instead of Quarrel. With both spellers out of the competition we were started to get ready for the Numeracy. The Numeracy team consisted of  Tyler, Ben,Kiana and Brydee. The numeracy was to be done on a special app. We sat round a table as a team and worked away though all the problems. The app let us know what place we where in and at one stage we were coming fourth. Towards the end of the test we were coming first place. The last question we answered first and we sat round the table hoping we were going to place. The results were in and we had placed first. We were extremely happy with that result, as our school had never placed first in the Mount Spa competition. We had a quick break to get fresh air and have a quick snack. The next event was General Knowledge, the team was Tyler, Ben, Lucy and Jamiee. The team ended up placing third. The literacy team was Tyler Lucy, Jamiee and Brydee. The questions were really hard.

Room 1's pizza day

This week on Tuesday, our class had a pizza, movie and Pj day with Miss Muggeridge. The first thing we did to start of our pizza, movie day was pick a movie. The movies we had 3 movies to choose from: Bolt; The Giant King; and The Big Green. (we choice the big green.) After we voted for the for the movie, groups of us made the pizza dough, while the rest of the class set up ingredients. After we made the pizza dough we put on our toppings and waited for them to be cook. While we were waiting we did school work that we need to finish of. After morning tea we waited for the movie start. It was lunch time and we were all sitting down eating our pizzas. After lunch some of us stayed in while we watched another movie (Bolt) and the rest of us that wanted to play a game went out and played a game. That was room 1's pizza day.
